Before the invention of mechanical hoists, general contractors hired men to hoist materials by pulling on ropes or using pulleys (see "The Lifting Platform"). In these systems the worker would pull on a rope attached securely to the end of a long pole and then this pole would be passed around and around a central post. This process required that workers stand or kneel at the end of a long pole and hoist materials with one hand while holding onto the rope with the other. These hoists were called "pully" hoists.  The first mechanical hoist was created in 1784 by a man named George Medhurst.

It was made of iron, shaped like an inverted letter L, and the rope that the worker pulled on went over the top of this hoist. The rope was attached to a pulley on one end and to a load at the other end. This design required only one worker instead of two as there needed to be someone on each side of this unit pulling simultaneously.
